Meet Meve! This 10-year-old has a passion for music that can’t be contained to just one instrument. She studies both cello and violin at Merit – South Shore, and once a week she comes to the Joy Faith Knapp Music Center in the West Loop to sing in our Children’s Choir!

We caught up with Meve to learn more about her musical journey, what inspires her, and how she finds joy through the power of music.

Tell us about your musical journey. How long have you been playing music?

Music has been in my life ever since I was born, introduced to me by my brothers. It piqued my interest, and when it came time for me to choose an instrument at nine [years old], I was presented with the cello. Its drastic difference from the other instruments I was familiar with drew my attention. It was strangely comfortable to handle. Paired with its soft and strong melodies, this encouraged me to move forward with it.

I was [also] curious about the violin and had simply thought it was just a smaller cello, and noticed the fact that they both use the same bow technique. This familiarity was what compelled me to choose these instruments.

Choir is a fun way to use my own instrument, the one we all have within ourselves, as part of my musical journey. I can’t wait for what it may become!

What do you love most about your instrument?

A way my teachers engage us is in fun activities relating to our instruments at the end of class.

Meet Meve's Instructors!

meve south shore student

How does playing music make you feel?

I feel tranquil and happy when I play my instruments. I always feel like myself when I’m making music.

If your instrument was a superhero, what would its power be?

I like my instruments [as they are], I’d never want them to be superheroes because they already have their very own superpower!

Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year at Merit School of Music!

From Near North to South Shore and beyond, Merit students are making music all throughout the city of Chicago! Whether you’re returning for another year or just starting your musical journey with us, we’re so glad you’re here, and we can’t wait to see all that you’ll discover, create, and accomplish this year.

At Merit, music is what brings us together, but it’s the community we build that makes this place truly special. Students from across the Chicagoland area come here not just to learn an instrument but to grow alongside each other, form meaningful friendships, and be part of something bigger than themselves. You belong here, in a space where collaboration, creativity, and care are at the heart of everything we do.

This year, we are thrilled to continue building community and nurturing that sense of connection.

Growth at Near North and South Shore

Now in their second year, our Near North and South Shore branches are thriving, and we’re proud to see these programs continue to grow and flourish!

At Merit – Near North, school-age students are diving into violin, cello, and piano, and this winter, we’re thrilled to add guitar to the mix with a 10-week Intro to Guitar mini session.

We’ve also introduced Jugamos Juntos to our Early Childhood offerings at Near North! This mixed-age bilingual Spanish class gives young children and their caregivers a joyful, culturally rich musical experience to share.

Meanwhile, over at Merit – South Shore, our violin and cello classes start in a few weeks, welcoming both brand-new and returning students. We’ve also launched a series of pop-up music classes for little ones ages 0-5, sparking early joy and curiosity through rhythm and song.

Merit Students & Alums Play On

On October 27, we’ll gather for the 7th annual Play On benefit concert, an evening that showcases not just incredible talent but the vibrant community that Merit helps create.

This year’s headliner is Resavoir, led by Merit alum Will Miller. We’re also thrilled to welcome back Julián Pujols Quall and their project Mamey, bringing a fresh and dynamic take on Dominico-Haitian jazz. And of course, Merit’s Honors Jazz Combo will open the night, continuing a proud tradition of excellence and creativity.

Join us at City Winery to celebrate the transformative power of music as you support our mission to make high-quality music education accessible to all.

Get your play on tickets

This year, I invite you to commit yourself fully to the music. Challenge yourself, embrace your creativity, and let your passion guide you.

But just as importantly, take the time to build connections. Get to know your classmates, your teachers, and the wider Merit community. The relationships you form here can be just as powerful as the music you make, because what makes Merit special isn’t just the music; it’s the community we build by showing up for each other, in rehearsal and beyond.

Welcome to a new year of learning, growing, and making music together.

All the best,

Meet Ellen, a 16-year-old cellist studying at Merit School of Music – Near North!

She has spent nearly her entire life immersed in music, beginning at only 18 months old in an Early Childhood music class taught by longtime Merit faculty member Janet Janz through the Suzuki Music School of Lincoln Park (now Merit – Near North).

In this student spotlight conversation, Ellen reflects on how music has taught her perseverance, connected her with a beloved mentor, and helped her find her voice through the cello. We are so excited to have Ellen as a Merit student now – one of many who joined us when Suzuki Music School of Lincoln Park became Merit – Near North last fall.

Tell us about your musical journey. How long have you been playing music? I began cello lessons with my teacher, Ms. Jan, at 5 years old, which means I have been playing for almost 12 years. I also took early childhood classes with Ms. Jan, beginning when I was 18 months old. Taking private lessons and joining orchestra have grown both my technique and confidence, which has made cello a big part of my life.

What do you love most about your instrument?

One of my favorite aspects of playing the cello is my ability to use music to connect with others, whether that is by sharing my music with friends and family through a performance, or meeting other people my age who also play an instrument.

What’s something you can do now on your instrument that you never thought you’d be able to do when you first started?

When I first started playing the cello, I never thought I’d be able to perform at a recital or be judged at an audition without letting nerves get the best of me. Now, I still experience stage fright, but I am able to remain focused and let the music shine.

ellen cello student

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think about your teacher?

When I think of [music and] Ms. Jan, the first word that comes to mind is friend.

Having spent so many years learning from her, I never feel insecure to ask for help on anything, since she has helped me build my skills up from zero. She has also been with me at every milestone, from completing Book 1 to supporting me at orchestra performances.

How has music influenced the way you express yourself?

Music has influenced me to stay dedicated to the things I am passionate about.

Reflecting on my growth from when I first started playing the cello at 5 years old to now, I am grateful that I stayed committed to my instrument because it has given me so many opportunities.

Even if a certain piece seemed too difficult to learn, or I was nervous to perform in front of a group of people, my perseverance has shown me that any goal is possible if I apply myself. This has helped me not only in music, but in high school and other extracurriculars as well.

Meet Emma, a first-time student at Merit’s Clarinet Camp. Fourteen-year-old Emma has been playing clarinet for a year and a half, and this summer she wants to improve her technique and expand her repertoire. Throughout the year, she practices frequently at home, where her baby brother tries to mimic her clarinet playing with his fidget toy.

Throughout the week, Emma learned classical clarinet repertoire, studied with renowned guest clarinetists, caught live performances at Merit and the Grant Park Music Festival, and more. She joined five other students and Merit’s renowned faculty for a week of group rehearsals, practice tips, and chamber music.

Though this is Emma’s first Clarinet Camp experience, she is no stranger to the Nancy W. Knowles Summer Camp Program here at Merit School of Music. When she enrolled in Camp Merit last summer, she had only been playing the clarinet for six months. She was challenged by the music she played in band, especially daunted by notes so high she’d never played them before. Resilient, she became more and more comfortable with playing high notes so that, by the time she tried out for her high school’s Symphonic Band in the fall, her range earned her a coveted spot. This summer, she is sure to face more challenges that will grow her abilities as a musician. Follow Emma through her week at Clarinet Camp!

Day One: Liftoff!

On July 7, Merit opened its doors to the camp students. Students arrived at 10am to check in and start warm-ups led by their instructor, Anna Najoom. In addition to warming up on their instrument, the class warmed up to each other through ice-breakers and camp activities.

Once the ice was broken, the young clarinetists shifted their focus to ensemble music. While most of the students were used to playing in a concert band where the clarinets are vastly out-numbered, this clarinet-only ensemble gave them a useful opportunity to better hear their instrument and their section. As Ms. Najoom puts it, the students are “in an ensemble where everyone can be heard and each part is important—you can’t hide, you have to count. Watching [the students] build their confidence is really exciting.”

After the morning’s ensemble rehearsal, students took a lunch break at noon and hung out in the community room. Emma and her new friends filled the time with card games and getting to know students from the Piano Camp and Flute Camp. The rest of her day was spent with more ensemble work, rehearsing, and getting to know her fellow campers. A challenging, fun first day was finally complete, but with faculty recitals, field trips, and performances ahead, Emma had a lot to look forward to.

Growing Enrollment and Excitement

The next morning, students from Merit’s Clarinet, Flute, and Piano Camps congregated first thing to witness a faculty recital and lecture led by Anna Najoom.

Ms. Najoom, a member of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, is back for another year of instructing Clarinet Camp. For the faculty recital, she engaged her students through a conversational atmosphere, accompanying the performance with technical explanations and historical background of each piece. She played a contrasting set list, taking her audience everywhere from the late baroque period to the contemporary works of jazz clarinetists. She was joined by fellow Merit faculty Susan Crandall on flute and Ligia Takei on piano.

Though Ms. Najoom works closely with the clarinetists throughout the week, she also called on some of her renowned colleagues and peers to teach masterclasses. This year, the students got to learn from Wagner Campos, a member of DePaul University’s music faculty and a frequent performer with Broadway in Chicago, and Dr. Bonnie Campbell, on faculty at VanderCook University and Merit. Emma recounts her biggest take-away from the masterclass with Campos: “Always have more than one reed!” Campos also showed the students that the clarinet, like any instrument, takes a lot of attention to detail. Every articulation can be more exaggerated, dynamics can be more powerful. “The caliber of guests that we’re able to get to come to Merit,” says Ms. Najoom, “it’s remarkable the people that will come and work with [our students].”

Grant Park Music Festival: Exploring the City

The third and final guest teacher introduced to students was Dario Brignoli, the principal clarinet for both the Grant Park Orchestra and the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. Students not only got to learn from Brignoli but got a glimpse into his life as a performer at the Grant Park Music Festival.

On Wednesday afternoon, students piled into a bus and took a trip down to Grant Park, where they met musicians from the Grant Park Orchestra. After a backstage tour and some introductions, students found their seats to hear the symphony play Má Vlast by Bedřich Smetana. In preparation for this concert, the clarinet students had learned an arrangement of Má Vlast at camp earlier that week. “They’re learning the main themes and playing it at camp, and then they can hear the professional orchestra at the concert later that night,” explained Ms. Najoom. This field trip gave the students a rare chance to witness behind-the-scenes a professional musician’s career—an opportunity that may just inspire them to start a career of their own.

Final Performance: Time to Shine!

As the week at Clarinet Camp concluded, the students prepared for a cumulative performance on Friday afternoon. The repertoire students had learned throughout the week—both in the clarinet-only ensemble and in the large ensemble with flutes—was now performed for a crowd of supportive parents and siblings in Merit’s Anne and Howard Gottlieb Hall. “We have kids coming from all different areas that don’t know each other, so it’s great seeing them bond; they’re excited,” says Ms. Najoom. “The kids are very supportive.”

Flute instructor Susan Crandall added: “It’s nice for the flutes and clarinets to play together. They have that feeling of balancing and getting used to playing and blending with each other, because the timbre of the instruments are a little different.”

To say the least, Emma has had a jam-packed week. Between hours of rehearsing new repertoire, meticulously improving technique, studying with world-class clarinetists, and hanging with her new friends, she certainly has a lot to take in.

But Emma’s musical journey doesn’t end after Merit’s Clarinet Camp. Next year, she will be joining Merit’s Alice S. Pfaelzer Conservatory where she will continue to flourish as a clarinetist and musician. Her experiences at Merit’s camps have set her up to grow and face challenges as a musician, and her experiences in the conservatory will set her up to face the world.

Continue Your Musical Journey

Two panels: a teacher holds up their arms as though playing violin, a young child plays violin

Last summer, Merit School of Music launched a new initiative in partnership with Bryn Mawr Community Church to expand access to high-quality music education in the South Shore community. What began as a pilot program has quickly become a vibrant and growing hub for young musicians in the neighborhood, and one year later, the excitement is only building.

This summer, every beginner class at Merit – South Shore is full. Demand is growing, and so is our commitment to making music education more accessible than ever. As we look ahead, we’re energized by the response from the community and more determined than ever to meet that enthusiasm with joyful, meaningful programming.

A Mission-Driven Partnership

“Music has the power to inspire, unite, and uplift,” says Pastor JeVon Dion Moore. “We believe that by bringing high-quality music education to our neighborhood, we can empower our youth and strengthen our community.”

This is the guiding principle that brought Bryn Mawr Community Church and Merit School of Music together in a meaningful partnership rooted in community, creativity, and opportunity. Pastor Moore’s deep commitment to the youth and neighborhood enrichment aligns beautifully with Merit’s mission to expand access to high-quality music education for all. Special thanks to Jennifer Montague, Merit Trustee and member of Bryn Mawr Community Church, who helped bring our two organizations together!

In July 2024, we kicked off our pilot program with a joyful summer of violin and West African Drumming and Dance classes. In the fall, we expanded to include violin and cello group classes and private lessons. For many of our young musicians, it was their first time ever holding an instrument—and by the end of the year, they proudly performed in their very first recital. It was a year of exciting “firsts,” filled with learning, growth, and joyful music-making.

Growing Enrollment and Excitement

Since its inception, Merit – South Shore has only continued to grow. Our group class enrollment for the current summer session has doubled compared to the school year—and every one of our beginning violin and cello classes is full! The response from the community has been inspiring, and we’re excited to keep meeting the demand for accessible, high-quality music education in South Shore.

Making Music in the Community

One of the most energizing parts of this collaboration has been our deep engagement with the community. Through music, we’ve had the chance to forge new connections across South Shore and beyond, and we’re so excited to continue on that path.

This summer, we’re thrilled to be part of the iconic Bud Billiken Festival, a beloved Chicago tradition! Come visit our booth for an instrument petting zoo, fun giveaways, and information about upcoming Merit – South Shore programs.

Music education can open doors, build confidence, and bring people together. And this is just the beginning. With every new student, every community event, and every note played, we’re creating something special. We are thrilled to continue this journey together.
